The first is to ensure you have a budget, you can be flexible with it but try to have a good idea of how much you are willing to spend.

The second piece of advice I have is about the importance of doing your research if you want to ensure you get the best generator make sure to read up about them.

Best Generators.org is a hub for all kinds of generator news so check it out. Now onto which features you should be on the lookout for.

Automatic Start

Automatic start is one of the most valuable features for a generator as it is what enables the generator to automatically switch on if it detects a fault or power outage.

This is an invaluable feature for a generator particularly larger home back-up models because there is a good chance you won’t be at home to switch it on in an emergency.

This really is a must-have feature for certain people and should be a priority.

Electric Start

This is a feature you will only normally find on portable generators as larger models will have automatic start instead.

If you are shopping for a portable generator then electric start will be quite useful as most portable generators will have a pull cord.

These can be a little unwieldy and difficult to get to grips with whereas electric start will activate your generator at the push of a button.

Fuel Gauge

Not every type of generator will come equipped with an easy to read fuel gauge many people think this is a standard feature but it isn’t.

Now, of course, you can still use a generator and even take certain readings without a fuel gauge but it can’t be argued that a gauge makes things much easier.

Automatic Shut-off

This is a feature that is normally a standard but not always so make sure you check up on it, especially if you are buying a portable model.

Automatic shut-off will shut down your generator to prevent engine damage if it detects low fuel, it’s a useful feature which is why its commonplace but make sure to double-check for it just in case.

Fuel Type

Well, this isn’t a feature in the traditional sense but make sure you consider all your options when it comes to the type of fuel your generator will use.

Each type is very different and some may be harder to buy and source than others.
