OpenAI's Reply to Elon Musk Lawsuit Against the Company and Sam Altman

Elon Musk sued OpenAI and Sam Altman over breaching the contract and building AGI. Elon claimed that AGI can be dangerous for humans. Now, OpenAI replied with a post published on OpenAI Blog. In this post, OpenAI revealed several emails sent by Elon Musk that favor AGI development and for-profit business.

Elon Musk's emails to OpenAI teams and Sam Altman reveal that the company intended to go for-profit. Also, emails clearly state that Elon Musk is aware of AGI technology and the funding required for that.

OpenAI Reply to Elon Musk's Lawsuit Against the Company and Sam Altman:

Here is what you must know:

Elon Musk, OpenAI and AGI:

On 22nd November 2015, Elon Musk sent this email to Greg Brockman saying that they need more than $100m in funding to avoid being hopeless. Google and Facebook were also spending massive amounts of dollars on developing AI technology.

In his email, Elon stated that it is best to start with $1 billion in funding.

In 2017, OpenAI realized that they need more funding every year to make AGI possible. The company was calculating the amount of funds required to develop AGI.

Elon Musk, OpenAI, and Less Open AI Technology:

On 2nd January 2026, Ilya Sutskever sent an email to Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, and Sam Altman that making AI development open would cause hard takeoff. In her email, she said that open-sourcing everything will drive the development of unsafe AI.

In his reply, Elon Musk only said, "Yup."

Elon Mush, Open AI, and for-profit Business:

On 31st January 2018, OpenAI sent an email to Elon Musk, explaining that Google has more resources like Deepmind, Google Brain, Cloud, TensorFlow, Research, and TPUs.

In its email, OpenAI said that publishing research in the Open and helping for free will make things worse. This is where the company thought about going for-profit.

For-profits can help the company raise more funds and develop AGI without disclosing information to the public. OpenAI wants to attach itself to Tesla as a cash cow.

Elon Musk Left OpenAI:

On 26th December 2018, Elon Musk sent an email to Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, and Sam Altman explaining his retreat from the company.

In his email, Elon explained that his assessment of OpenAI being better than Google or Deepmind AI is zero.

There is a continuous need for billions of dollars every year.

Conclusion:

Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman reveals many things that were not in the public domain. Elon claims that he wanted OpenAI to stay as a non-profit. AGI and for-profit businesses are against the original commitment.

OpenAI's post that revealed emails between Elon Musk and OpenAI told that Elon knew from the beginning that OpenAI would become for-profit and needed billions of dollars in investment to develop AGI.

While this post reveals something, we still have to wait and see what will happen with the OpenAI lawsuit.

OpenAI is already facing a lawsuit from The New York Times.

The company is attracting multiple lawsuits.

Elon Musk Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Sam Altman:

According to Musk, the original goal of OpenAI was to create an open-source, non-profit AI. But OpenAI partnership with Microsoft is hiding secrets.

Microsoft is investing billions of dollars in OpenAI. This investment can benefit Microsoft as OpenAI maybe secretly develop a best in-class AI for Microsoft.

Elon Musk supported OpenAI because of its non-profit and open-source goals.

Now the company is shifting its priorities to satisfy investors.

Elon Musk Lawsuit and OpenAI:

Elon Musk has been talking about the threats of AI. He claimed that OpenAI moved from an open-source path to closed-source path to for-profit its investors. OpenAI is developing AGI for Microsoft.

Elon Musk asked in his lawsuit that OpenAI should make its research public. Sam Altman should refund the money gained with alleged practices.

Musk also said that he has invested $44 million in OpenAI.

OpenAI response is that OpenAI founders has discussed the for-profit AI with Elon Musk during its early stage. But Elon wants total control.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman Feud:

Elon Musk and Sam Altman feud started years ago when Musk and Altman clashed over control and profit. In 2018, Elon Musk left the co-founding role.

His investments in OpenAI also decreased or slowed down.

Microsoft and OpenAI:

Microsoft is the biggest investor in OpenAI.

Microsoft already invested $13 billion to get 49% share in OpenAI. This step has raised the eyebrows of many who believed that OpenAI is a non-profit organization.

Sam Altman Fired the OpenAI Board:

In December 2023, OpenAI board fired Sam Altman. Later, Sam Altman came back as CEO and replaced the old OpenAI board of members with the new.

Elon Musk believes that new board members are incapable of dealing with AI technology and the future.

There are also issues related to Sam Altman communications with the board.

Sam Altman and Jason Kawon also made comment in email saying that Elon is coming with a lawsuit because he is not the part of OpenAI.

Conclusion:

Elon Musk-OpenAI-Sam Altman lawsuit is making headlines because the biggest tech giants are fighting a court battle over AI.

Where Elon Musk claimed that he wants OpenAI to stay non-profit, OpenAI board is making the company for-profit for its investors.

From Sam Altman to Steve Jobs to Jack Dorsey, 6 CEOs fired from their own company.

Here, I am listing 6 other CEOs who were fired before Sam Altman:

1. Sam Altman:

Sam Altman founded OpenAI in 2015 with Greg Brockman, Pamela Vagata, and Ilya Sutskever. Surprisingly, Ilya Sutskever is one of the board members who have fired Sam Altman. Also, Greg Brokman was removed from the board. Greg has also resigned from OpenAI.

Now Microsoft is gaining two geniuses from OpenAI as, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will join Microsoft now.

2. Steve Jobs:

Steve Jobs founded Apple in 1976, and he was fired in 1985. Steve had a confrontation with other board members. The board of directors at Apple claimed that Steve Jobs had poor management skills that could damage the company.

Be they had to bring him back in 1997. Steve Jobs again became CEO for the next 14 years. Later, Tim Cook became the Apple CEO.

3. Jack Dorsey:

Jack Dorsey founded Twitter in 2006 and was fired in 2008. Twitter's board of directors found him unfit to run the company. Twitter was facing an outage issue, and Dorsey could not fix it. It is also said that Jack Dorsey spends more time in Yoga and Fashion design than on Twitter.

Jack Dorsey returned as CEO at Twitter in 2015 and stayed till 2021.

4. Marissa Mayer:

Marissa Mayer became CEO at Yahoo in 2012. She received a $23 million severance package and resigned. Yahoo was facing user data leaks and security breaches.

5. Cary Florina:

Cary Florina was CEO at Hewlett Packard. She joined in 1999 and left in 2005. Hewlett Packard's board of directors fired her because she failed to execute any strategy to boost revenue and cut costs.

6. Travis Kalanick:

Travis Kalanick was Uber's CEO. He resigned in 2017 when he took a leave of absence. A former employee published a blog about harassment and discrimination at Uber.

Conclusion:

This list displays that it is quite often when a CEO got fired from his company. Sometimes the reason is genuine and sometimes its all about politics inside the company.

Ilya Sutskever posted his regret today on X (formerly known as Twitter).
